Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

A study of the transference between empathy towards companion animals and empathy towards humans in children [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Plan AViolence in our society is a growing concern. There is evidence of increasing violent behavior in young children. Problems such as teasing and schoolyard bullying have turned into vicious attacks and even murder. Professionals and lay persons alike

The Role of Companion Dogs in the VA Maryland Health Care System Whole Health(y) GeroFit Program [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
GeroFit is a gym-based exercise program that promotes health and wellness among older sedentary veterans. The aims of the current study were to determine whether providing a companion dog as an alternative to gym-based exercise would similarly affect ...

Lymph food to improve canine atopic dermatitis: a randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial in dogs with standard-care treatment

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
IntroductionMicronutritional deficits are linked to increased morbidity and mortality. Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) often presents with iron depletion and subclinical inflammation, despite their typical meat-based diets, suggesting widespread ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Factors Affecting Canine Obesity Seem to Be Independent of the Economic Status of the Country—A Survey on Hungarian Companion Dogs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
For a companion dog, the most important environmental factor is the owner, who is responsible for providing everything that is necessary for the health and welfare of the dog.

A High Number of Ring-Down Artefacts and an Irregular Pleural Surface Are More Commonly Observed in WHWTs Suffering from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Compared to Control WHWTs

open access: yesAnimals
Canine idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (CIPF) is an interstitial lung disease reported in West Highland white terriers (WHWTs). B-mode ultrasonography (US) is used in human medicine as an adjunct tool for interstitial lung disease, including idiopathic ...
