Latent Tuberculosis Infection among Household Contacts of Tuberculosis Patients, Healthcare Workers, and Tuberculosis Patients Using QuantiFERON-tuberculosis Gold Plus and Tuberculin Skin Test in a Tertiary Care Hospital Setting Bhubaneswar, Odisha – A Cross-sectional Study

open access: yesJournal of Global Infectious Diseases
Introduction: Contacts of tuberculosis (TB) patients have an increased risk of latent TB infection (LTBI). Currently, it is diagnosed using one of the two methods: Tuberculin skin test (TST) or QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus.

Multiple comparisons [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2015
Oat plants grown at an agricultural research facility produce higher yields in Field 1 than in Field 2, under well fertilised conditions and with similar weather exposure; all oat plants in both fields are healthy and show no sign of disease. In this study, the authors hypothesised that the soil microbial community might be different in each field, and

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Simulating the Aerial Ballet: The Dance of Fire-Fighting Planes and Helicopters

open access: yesEngineering Proceedings
This study introduces a simulation model to analyze the efficacy of different aerial firefighting strategies in Finland, focusing on the comparative water production capacity and associated costs of firefighting aircraft versus helicopters of varying ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Comparison of grading of aortic stenosis between transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography in adult patients undergoing elective aortic valve replacement surgeries: A prospective observational study

open access: yesAnnals of Cardiac Anaesthesia, 2019
Introduction: Intraoperative trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE) has been found to underestimate severity of aortic stenosis (AS) compared to trans-thoracic echo (TTE).

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Hematology instruments don’t speak the same language: a comparison study between flagging messages of sysmex XN-1000 and alinity H

open access: yesJournal of Laboratory Medicine
While manual review is the gold standard, automated hematology analyzers are increasingly used. This study assessed the efficiency of white blood cell (WBC)-related flagging messages from the Sysmex XN-1000 and Alinity hq analyzers compared to peripheral

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
