Compensatory adrenal growth: a neurally mediated reflex
American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1976The responses of young rats to left adrenalectomy or left adrenal manipulation were compared to surgical sham adrenalectomy in which adrenals were observed but not touched. At 12 h right adrenal wet weight, dry weight, DNA, RNA, and protein content were increased (P less than 0.05) after the first two operations.

Renal glutathione homeostasis in compensatory renal growth
Life Sciences, 1988Glutathione homeostasis was investigated in unilaterally nephrectomized and sham-operated rats. Following twelve days of compensatory renal growth, it was found that the concentrations of glutathione and glutathione disulfide in representative samples of the entire remnant right kidney from the nephrectomized rats were similar to those found in ...

Compensatory adrenal growth in dexamethasone treated rats
Virchows Archiv B Cell Pathology Including Molecular Pathology, 1988The changes in right adrenal weight and adrenocortical mitotic activity have been quantified in the early (up to 72 h) stages following left adrenalectomy or sham adrenalectomy in adult male Sprague Dawley rats. These have been compared with the changes seen in rats pretreated for 14 days with a daily intraperitoneal injection of the synthetic ...

[Compensatory skeletal growth modifications].
Stomatologie der DDR, 1977Impaired growth at one end of a long bone may be compensated by increased growth at the intact end. In experiments, such a compensatory growth was less frequently observed in the cartilaginous structures of the skull than in the sutures. Achondroplasia is an example of compensatory growth in the neurocranium, the disturbed growth of the base of the ...

Polyribosomes during compensatory growth of the kidney
Journal of Surgical Research, 1966Summary Polyribosomes were isolated from kidneys after contralateral nephrectomy and after sham operation and identified by isotopic labeling and density gradient centrifugation. o 1. Nephrectomy greatly increased the yield of ribosome-associated material. 2.

Signals and mechanisms of compensatory lung growth
Journal of Applied Physiology, 2004Growth of the lung involves unique structure-function interactions not seen in solid organs. Mechanical feedback between the lung and thorax constitutes a major signal that sustains developmental as well as compensatory lung growth. After the loss of lung units as by pneumonectomy (PNX), increased mechanical stress and strain on the remaining units ...
