The Jungle Universe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper, we exploit the fact that the dynamics of homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaitre universes is a special case of generalized Lotka-Volterra system where the competitive species are the barotropic fluids filling the Universe.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Survival of the Scarcer in Space

open access: yes, 2013
The dynamics leading to extinction or coexistence of competing species is of great interest in ecology and related fields. Recently a model of intra- and interspecific competition between two species was proposed by Gabel et al. [Phys. Rev.

How effective are maternal effects at having effects? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The well studied trade-off between offspring size and offspring number assumes that offspring fitness increases with increasing per-offspring investment.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Dynamics in a ratio-dependent Lotka–Volterra competitive-competitive-cooperative system with feedback controls and delays

open access: yesAdvances in Difference Equations, 2021
This study investigates the dynamical behavior of a ratio-dependent Lotka–Volterra competitive-competitive-cooperative system with feedback controls and delays. Compared with previous studies, both ratio-dependent functional responses and time delays are

Rivals’ Reactions to Mergers and Acquisitions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Mergers and acquisitions research has principally focused on attributes of the acquiring firm and post-acquisition outcomes. To extend our knowledge, we focus on external factors, in particular rival responses, and explore when and how rivals respond to ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Nematode Predation and Competitive Interactions Affect Microbe-Mediated Phosphorus Dynamics

open access: yesmBio, 2022
Nematode predation plays an essential role in determining changes in the rhizosphere microbiome. These changes affect the local nutrient balance and cycling of essential nutrients by selectively structuring interactions across functional taxa in the ...
