Compliant transmission mechanisms

2018
Classical human-engineered transmission mechanisms such as linkages, gears, and couplings are well established designs which made out of multiple parts and rigid hinges. However, these mechanisms impose disadvantages such as wear, friction, low precision and reliability, need for assembly and lubrications, and difficulty for miniaturization.

Magneto-Elastic Compliant Mechanisms

Volume 6C: 18th Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, 2001
Abstract The motivation for this work has been a variety of motions like navigation of pipelines, insertion operations in assembly, and gripping actions, which require the adaptation of the mechanism to the external constraints, rather than avoid them.

Active Compliant Parallel Mechanisms

Volume 5A: 38th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, 2014
In a novel compliant parallel mechanism, a motor and spring are arranged in a parallel fashion and are connected to a movable lever arm. The motor pushes and pulls on one attachment point and the spring stores and releases energy at a second attachment point.

Mechanisms of Compliant Shells

2019
Thin shells are three dimensional curved solids with a thickness that is small compared to the two other dimensions. For structural engineers, traditional rigid thin shells are some of the most efficient structural typologies. The curvature and continuity that characterizes them are the source of their high stiffness under loading.

Origami-equivalent compliant mechanism

Applied Physics Letters, 2019
Origami structures have gained tremendous attention due to their extreme kinematic performance. However, typical origami structures suffer from poor load-bearing capacity due to extreme slenderness of facets. In this letter, we introduce a technique to design an origami-equivalent compliant mechanism which preserves the origami kinetics and kinematics ...

Compliant Parallel-Guiding Mechanisms

Volume 2A: 24th Biennial Mechanisms Conference, 1996
Abstract The rigid-link parallel-guiding (or parallelogram) mechanism is perhaps one of the simplest closed-loop mechanisms to analyze. Compliant parallel-guiding mechanisms, often called plate-spring mechanisms, are in common use in many applications. Advances in compliant mechanism modeling and synthesis have provided an opportunity to

A Compliant Mechanism as a Sternum Prosthesis

2020
This paper presents a three-dimensional design of a compliant mechanism as a transmission system for its application in a novel human sternum prosthesis. The proposed compliant mechanism design is able to generate a coordinated movement between ribs during the respiratory process in human beings.

Mechanics in naturally compliant structures

Mechanics of Materials, 2007
Abstract In this study the mechanics of compliant structures (very light weight structures which do not have bending capability but have axial stiffness (tension)) in particular to spider web has been studied. The orb-web spider has evolved over the last 180 million years [Lin, L.H., Edmonds, D.T., Vollrath, F., 1995. Structural engineering of an orb-

Compliant Mechanism as Bicycle Spokes

This paper was presented at the 29th International Scientific Conference MECHANIKA 2025, held on 23 May 2025 at Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania. The paper introduces a compliant bicycle spoke design inspired by the Chinese finger trap geometry, using helical composite strips to achieve vibration damping and shock absorption without ...
