The Creation of the Composite Bow in Canaanite Mythology
Journal of Near Eastern Studies, 1942In spite of the war and the consequent cessation of the work of publishing original texts in the cuneiform alphabet of Ugarit,' the study of these priceless records has continued actively. The appearance of Cyrus H. Gordon's Ugaritic Grammar (Rome, 1940)2 will have a stabilizing effect on North Canaanite studies, since there will henceforth be a ...

The Classical Quarterly, 2013
This article aims to throw light on a recurrent structural feature of Heraclitus' style that, it will be argued, serves as a tool to enrich interpretation of his fragments. Named after the bow image used by the philosopher in B51, the ‘bow composition’ will be presented as a narrative technique developed by Heraclitus to reveal his conception of the ...

Composite Bows from the Tomb of Tutankhamun
Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient, 1972The results of meticulous study of 32 composite bows and some fragments found in the tomb of Tutankhmaun are presented in this book. In the Catalogue each bow is described in detail; in the Morphological Commentary the special features of the composite bow (length, profile, materials, decoration, etc.) are discussed in more general terms; and the ...

Composite Bows from Uch-kurbu in Kyrgyzstan
Archaeology, Ethnology and Anthropology of Eurasia, 2013Abstract The article addresses the topic of composite bows from nomadic sites in Tien Shan and Zhetysu. Horn plates from bows discovered in 2008–2009 at Uch-Kurbu on the Tosor River, the Issyk-Kul Depression (Kyrgyzstan), are described and analyzed.

Bow musical instrument made of composite material
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1993A bow musical instrument in which at least the front (1) is constituted by a thin wall of composite material comprising at least two superposed sheets (A, B, C, D, . . . ) of crossed and directed long fibers, the wall being covered on at least one of its faces with a lining material (Y, Z) of considerably lower density than the fibers, wherein the ...

Thermoelastic bowing of composite cylindrical fuel rods
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 1968Abstract The thermoelastic bowing of axially unrestrained nuclear fuel rods due to a transversely linear internal heat generation rate is investigated. The problem consists of first determining the steady-state, two dimensional temperature distribution in the circular cross section of the rod and then solving for the corresponding stresses and ...

"Bimetallic" Bow of Rigid Urethane Foam Composites

Egyptian Composite Bows in New York
American Journal of Archaeology, 1962Throughout the ages a guerdon of fame has usually been accorded worthy bowmen; "all maner of tongues & writers, Hebrue, Greke and Latine, hath so plentifullie spoken of it, as of fewe other thinges like."2 For instance, Greek legend recorded a contest between two princes, who were to shoot through a ring which lay on the breast of the infant Sarpedon.3

Giant and Composition-Dependent Optical Bowing Coefficient in GaAsN Alloys
Physical Review Letters, 1996Using first-principles supercell calculations we find a giant (7{endash}16 eV) and composition-dependent optical bowing coefficient in GaAs{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}N{sub {ital x}} alloys. We show that both effects are due to the formation in the alloy of spatially separated and sharply localized band edge states.

A pseudopotentiel formalism coupled with the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) is applied to study the influence of the composition on the A"xB"1"-"xC ternary band gap in zinc blende phase. Our theoretical results show that the band gaps are affected by the compositional disorder.
