The computational stance in biology [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2019
The goal of this article is to call attention to, and to express caution about, the extensive use of computation as an explanatory concept in contemporary biology. Inspired by Dennett's ‘intentional stance’ in the philosophy of mind, I suggest that a ‘computational stance’ can be a productive approach to evaluating the value of computational concepts ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Marrying computers with biology [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1993
An interesting symposium last month suggests that computation and molecular biology, already interdependent, are about to become inextricably linked.
