Introduction to measures of inequality and concentration in tourism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
There are many statistical measures available in the literature for the analysis of inequality and concentration. The most common measure in this field is the Gini index (Roselló Nadal et al.,2004), which is associated to the Lorenz curve.

Food Tastes in the United States: Convergence or Divergence?

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates how food consumption tastes have changed in recent decades across the United States. Using NielsenIQ data for over 77 million transactions, there is evidence of divergence in food tastes across regions from 2007 to 2016 and across households of different income, education, and race/ethnicity groups.

An improved bound for the Gaussian concentration inequality

open access: yes, 2019
In this note, we provide an improved bound for the Gaussian concentration inequality. Our proof is short and bases on the integration-by-parts formula for the gaussian measure.Comment: 4 ...

The distributional impact of KiwiSaver incentives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
New Zealand’s approach to retirement incomes profoundly changed with the recent introduction of KiwiSaver and its associated tax incentives. Previous policy reduced lifetime inequality but KiwiSaver and its tax incentives will increase future inequality ...

The Power of Unity: Collective Action and Smallholder Agricultural Performance in West Africa

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We analyze the impact of collective action through farmer‐based organizations (FBOs) on smallholders' farm performance and income inequality in Ghana, Benin, The Gambia, and Mali. We find that FBO membership increases cereal yield in Ghana and The Gambia, legume yield in Mali, ruminant numbers in Benin and The Gambia, and total farm income in ...

Concentration for independent random variables with heavy tails

open access: yes, 2005
If a random variable is not exponentially integrable, it is known that no concentration inequality holds for an infinite sequence of independent copies.

Modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities

open access: yes, 2004
We present a class of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, interpolating between Poincar\'e and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, suitable for measures of the type $\exp(-|x|^\al)$ or more complex $\exp(-|x|^\al\log^\beta(2+|x|))$ ($\al\in]1,2[$ and $

Tree/Endofunction Bijections and Concentration Inequalities

open access: yesThe Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2022
We demonstrate a method for proving precise concentration inequalities in uniformly random trees on $n$ vertices, where $n\geq1$ is a fixed positive integer. The method uses a bijection between mappings $f\colon\{1,\ldots,n\}\to\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and doubly rooted trees on $n$ vertices.
