Predicting the Probability of War During Brinkmanship Crises: The Beagle and the Malvinas Conflicts [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2003
This paper argues that a major cause of war in a brinkmanship crisis is not the misperception of the adversary´s response, but rather a situation where leaders are compelled to act because of domestic threats to their power. A comparison of the brinkmanship crises of the Beagle and the Malvinas show that the prospect of war was critically affected by ...

Applicability of mitotic figure counting by deep learning: a development and pan‐cancer validation study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we developed a deep learning method for mitotic figure counting in H&E‐stained whole‐slide images and evaluated its prognostic impact in 13 external validation cohorts from seven different cancer types. Patients with more mitotic figures per mm2 had significantly worse patient outcome in all the studied cancer types except colorectal ...

Financial Deregulation and Crisis:An ‘Agency-conflict’ Case of Japan [PDF]

open access: yes
The main focus of this paper is on the ‘agency-conflict’ during financial deregulations in the 1980s as the potential causality of Japanese banking crisis in the 1990s.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

"It from bit" and the quantum probability rule [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
I argue that, on the subjective Bayesian interpretation of probability, "it from bit" requires a generalization of probability theory. This does not get us all the way to the quantum probability rule because an extra constraint, known as noncontextuality,

Digital twins to accelerate target identification and drug development for immune‐mediated disorders

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Digital twins integrate patient‐derived molecular and clinical data into personalised computational models that simulate disease mechanisms. They enable rapid identification and validation of therapeutic targets, prediction of drug responses, and prioritisation of candidate interventions.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

A Tunnel Fire Detection Method Based on an Improved Dempster-Shafer Evidence Theory

open access: yesSensors
Tunnel fires are generally detected using various sensors, including measuring temperature, CO concentration, and smoke concentration. To address the ambiguity and inconsistency in multi-sensor data, this paper proposes a tunnel fire detection method ...

Civil Conflict and Secessions [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper studies secessions as the outcome of conflict between regions. We study under what conditions regions will divert costly resources to fight each other over political borders.
