Dermatologic diagnosis is primarily based on interpretation of morphological information by visual inspection, confirmed by histopathological diagnosis if necessary. The challenge is to establish a correct diagnosis and to identify all malignant lesions while minimizing unnecessary surgical procedures.

Confocal microscopy is an excellent method for studying the localization of fluorescent stains. Used in this way, superior 3D images can be obtained from multiple optical sections with very shallow depth of field. The main advantage of this technique is that the sample is not damaged.
