The Conical Pendulum Driven with a LEGO® Stepper Motor
The Physics Teacher, 2018This work describes a way to study uniform circular motion (UCM) using a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Robotics Invention System (RIS) stepper motor with a steel ball attached to a string. The equipment is inexpensive and the resulting motion takes place on a human scale. Times and lengths can be measured with a stopwatch and a meterstick, respectively.

Motoring performance of a conical pole-pair separated bearingless electric machine
IEEE 2011 EnergyTech, 2011In standard motor applications, traditional mechanical bearings represent the most economical approach to rotor suspension. However, in certain high performance applications, rotor suspension without bearing contact is either required or highly beneficial.

Thermal Analysis of the Conical Rotor Motor Using LPTN With Accurate Heat Transfer Coefficients
IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2016In this paper, a transient lumped parameter thermal solution combined with finite volume mode is presented. The conical rotor motor is widely used in industrial applications because of its self-locking ability, e.g., in hoisting equipment. It is also very important to investigate its thermal characteristics at design step in order to ensure safe ...

A Flexible Control Method of Axial Force for Conical Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motors
2018 IEEE International Conference on Electrical Systems for Aircraft, Railway, Ship Propulsion and Road Vehicles & International Transportation Electrification Conference (ESARS-ITEC), 2018The 5-Degree-Of-Freedom (5-DOF) magnetic levitation technique can further increase the power density of driving systems in aircraft applications. The conical bearingless switched reluctance motor (CBSRM) can generate the axial force due to its conical rotor structure, thus it can be adopted to remove the axial magnetic bearing in the 5-DOF magnetic ...

Single Machine Control of Axial Force for Conical Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motors
2019 22nd International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS), 2019The five Degree-of-Freedom active suspension system consisting of two conical bearingless switched reluctance motors(CBSRMs) is a novel structure. The rotor can rotate and fully suspend at the same time without magnetic bearings. This paper proposes a single machine control method of axial force for CBSRMs.

Analysis of non-uniform magnetic flux distribution in conical rotor double-speed induction motors
2019 16th Conference on Electrical Machines, Drives and Power Systems (ELMA), 2019The variable geometric dimensions of the magnetic circuit in the conical rotor induction motors in axial direction makes the magnetic flux non-uniform distribution in the length of the magnetic core. An analytical multisectional method for electromagnetic calculation has been developed accounting the special features of the motor design.

The radial and levitation forces, necessary to suspend a double conical permanent magnet synchronous rotor, are generated by superposition of the rotor field and two stator fields with one pole pair difference. Due to the superposition of the fields in the air gap, some force interferences are disturbing the levitated drive.
