Gibbs sampling, conjugate priors and coupling [PDF]

open access: possibleSankhya A, 2010
We give a large family of simple examples where a sharp analysis of the Gibbs sampler can be proved by coupling. These examples involve standard statistical models — exponential families with conjugate priors or location families with natural priors. Our main approach uses a single eigenfunction (always explicitly available in the examples in question)

Conjugate priors for generalized MaxEnt families

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2014
Bayes theorem can be seen as the result of an optimization problem. By slightly altering this optimization problem many generalized Bayes rules can be constructed. In this work we show that a notion of a conjugate prior for non exponential family distributions can be recovered if one uses one of these generalized rules.

An Alternative Conjugate Prior Distribution for Positive Parameters [PDF]

open access: possibleAnnals of Data Science, 2018
In this paper, we propose a new conjugate prior probability distribution to many likelihoods distributions. In particular, we use the weighted Lindley distribution as a conjugate prior distribution. The weighted Lindley distribution can be viewed as a mixture of two gamma distributions with know weights.

Finite mixture of gamma distributions: A conjugate prior

Computational Statistics & Data Analysis, 2007
A finite mixture of gamma distributions [Finite mixture of certain distributions. Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 31(12), 2123-2137] is used as a conjugate prior, which gives a nice form of posterior distribution. This class of conjugate priors offers a more flexible class of priors than the class of gamma prior distributions. The usefulness of a mixture

Conjugate Priors Represent Strong Pre‐Experimental Assumptions

Scandinavian Journal of Statistics, 2004
Abstract. It is well known that Jeffreys’ prior is asymptotically least favorable under the entropy risk, i.e. it asymptotically maximizes the mutual information between the sample and the parameter. However, in this paper we show that the prior that minimizes (subject to certain constraints) the mutual information between the sample and the parameter ...

A Class of Conjugate Hierarchical Priors for Gammoid Likelihoods

Scandinavian Actuarial Journal, 1989
The class of gamma distributions is known to be the natural conjugate family of priors for gammoid likelihoods like e.g. the Poisson or exponen tial. This result is extended to the hierarchical case where the observations are stratified in a nested pattern.
