YlmG1 is localized exclusively to the chloroplast envelope membrane and is involved in preprotein translocation in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cytosolically synthesized chloroplast preproteins are translocated across the outer and inner envelope membranes through translocons called TOC and TIC, respectively. In green algae and plants, the TIC core is composed of essential membrane proteins, Tic12, Tic20, and Tic214.

The geographical variation in grassland forage quality on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is driven mainly by climate

open access: yesEcological Processes
Background Forage quality is a fundamental determinant for livestock productivity in natural grasslands, and is sensitive to the variations in climate, soil, and plant community composition.

Dynamics of cadmium and sulfamethoxazole removal by Chrysopogon zizanioides under individual and combined pollution conditions under exogenous phosphate addition

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Reducing phosphorus loads is key to water eutrophication control and has become a current research focus. Cadmium (Cd) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are typical pollutants in wetland environments and are commonly co-occur.

Effect of grazing on ship rat density in forest fragments of lowland Waikato, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ship rat (Rattus rattus) density was assessed by snap-trapping during summer and autumn in eight indigenous forest fragments (mean 5 ha) in rural landscapes of Waikato, a lowland pastoral farming district of the North Island, New Zealand.

Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Biodiversity offsets can be a valuable tool in achieving sustainable development: Developing a holistic model for biodiversity offsets that incorporates environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The interpretation and use of biodiversity offsets in planning and development is a contentious issue because they rarely encompass each of the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Incorporating Human Beliefs and Behaviors into Wildlife Ecology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Like much of the global biosphere, wildlife species have experienced rapid declines during the Anthropocene. Wildlife ecologists have responded to these crises by developing a range of technologies, techniques, and large datasets, which together have ...

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Nitrogen and phosphorus addition interactively affected the abundance of soil nematodes in a Tibetan alpine meadow

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
There has been a significant increase in atmospheric nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deposition since the Industrial Revolution, profoundly affecting the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems.
