Roles of N and P in Soil Acidification, Metals Mobilization and Bioavailable Concentration-Based Soil Fertility Assessment in Tea Plantations in Yunnan, China

open access: yesAgriculture
Tea yield is determined by soil fertility. An elemental bioavailable-content-based fertility assessment is more reliable than that of total content. In tea plantations, soil acidification occurs, affecting metals’ bioavailability and fertility, yet the ...

Profiling the Bacterial Diversity in a Typical Karst Tiankeng of China

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2019
While karst tiankengs have a higher capacity to act as safe havens for biodiversity in changing climates, little is known about their soil microorganisms. To fill this gap, we investigate the distribution and driving factors of the bacterial community in

Scratching the Surface and Digging Deeper: Exploring Ecological Theories in Urban Soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Humans have altered the Earth more extensively during the past 50 years than at any other time in history (Millennium Assessment 2003). A significant part of this global change is the conversion of land covers from native ecosystems to those dominated by

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Phenology-mediated effects of phenotype on the probability of social polygyny and its fitness consequences in a migratory passerine

open access: yesBMC Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Why females engage in social polygyny remains an unresolved question in species where the resources provided by males maximize female fitness. In these systems, the ability of males to access several females, as well as the willingness of females to mate

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Polypropylene and Polylactic Acid Microplastics Alter Plateau Wetland Seed Bank Emergence and Community Assembly: A Greenhouse Stress Test Experiment

open access: yesPlants
Microplastic contamination has emerged as a growing concern for soil ecosystems and their ecological functioning. However, the effects of microplastic contamination in fragile plateau wetlands remain poorly understood.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
