A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Silent spinal cord tumor

open access: yesJournal of Spinal Surgery, 2017
Introduction: Intramedullary spinal cord tumors are rare, representing 4 to 10% of all central nervous system tumors. They account for 20% of all intraspinal tumors in adults and 35% of all intraspinal tumors in children.

Political brand image: an investigation into the operationalisation of the external orientation of David Cameron’s Conservative brand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This paper seeks to address the limited understanding of how to operationalise the external brand image of a political brand. More specifically, this research critically assesses the transfer potential of the six variables of brand image by Bosch, Venter,

RNA Sequencing Resolves Cryptic Pathogenic Variants in Mitochondrial Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Mitochondrial diseases are the most common inherited metabolic disorders, characterized by pronounced clinical and genetic heterogeneity that complicates molecular diagnosis. Although DNA‐based sequencing approaches have become standard in genetic testing, up to half of patients remain without a definitive diagnosis.

High‐Resolution MRI Revealed Different Etiology‐Specific Associations With Cerebral Infarction in Adult Moyamoya Vasculopathy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective High‐resolution MRI enables detailed assessment of intracranial vessel wall pathology in moyamoya vasculopathy. We aimed to classify adult moyamoya vasculopathy etiologies using high‐resolution MRI and to examine subtype‐specific associations between high‐resolution MRI features and ischemic infarction.

Fermion number conservation isn't fermion conservation [PDF]

open access: yesNuclear Physics B - Proceedings Supplements, 1994
A nonperturbative regularization of the Standard Model may have a superficially undesirable exact global U(1) symmetry corresponding to exact fermion number conservation. We argue that such a formulation can still have the desired physics of fermion nonconservation, i.e. fermion particle creation and annihilation by sphaleron transitions. We illustrate
