Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Learning and Time-Varying Macroeconomic Volatility [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper presents a DSGE model in which agents' learning about the economy can endogenously generate time-varying macroeconomic volatility. Economic agents use simple models to form expectations and need to learn the relevant parameters.

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Default mode network activity is related to efficiency in a combined motion error and gambling task

open access: yesScientific Reports
Decision-making under risk lies at the core of strategic action in human activities. Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms underlying decision-making in trial-and-error-based learning in the absence of explicit risk ratios have not been thoroughly ...

Regression machine learning methods for isolation prediction and massive gain broadband MIMO antenna design for 28 GHz applications

open access: yesResults in Optics
This research paper investigates the design and analysis of a miniaturized mm-Wave MIMO antenna array tailored for fifth-generation applications. The antenna demonstrates a calculated 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 16.61 % (27.137–31.788 GHz).

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

How Do Trainees Use EPAs to Regulate Their Learning in the Clinical Environment? A Grounded Theory Study

open access: yesPerspectives on Medical Education
Introduction: Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) can potentially support self-regulated learning in the clinical environment. However, critics of EPAs express doubts as they see potential harms, like checkbox behaviour. This study explores how GP-

Inclusion of the homeless in health equity curricula: a needs assessment study

open access: yesMedical Education Online, 2020
Exposure to homeless patients is a potential strategy to teach about social determinants of health and health inequities. Little is known about student attitudes and preferences for learning about the homeless in curricula addressing vulnerable ...

On the power of direct tests for rational expectations against the alternative of constant gain learning [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper we study the power of direct tests for rational expectations against the constant gain learning alternative. The investigation is by means of a Monte Carlo study.
