Detection of Contact Binaries Using Sparse High Phase Angle Lightcurves

open access: yes, 2007
We show that candidate contact binary asteroids can be efficiently identified from sparsely sampled photometry taken at phase angles >60deg. At high phase angle, close/contact binary systems produce distinctive lightcurves that spend most of the time at ...

Is Young's Modulus a Critical Coating Property Determining Fouling‐Release Performance of Marine Coatings?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The release of foulers from protective marine coatings is determined by several interrelated material properties, including the strength of Young's modulus, the flexibility of chain segments, the surface free energy, and the magnitude of hydrodynamic stress.

Liquid droplets on a free-standing glassy membrane: deformation through the glass transition

open access: yes, 2017
In this study, micro-droplets are placed on thin, glassy, free-standing films where the Laplace pressure of the droplet deforms the free-standing film, creating a bulge. The film's tension is modulated by changing temperature continuously from well below

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

Investigating the Effects of Build Height on Mechanical Behavior of Large‐Scale Laser Wire Directed Energy Deposited Nickel Titanium Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser wire directed energy deposition process was leveraged to fabricate large scale NiTi alloy wall. Evaluation of build‐height‐dependent tribo‐mechanical properties revealed significant differences in location specific sample characteristics. The middle region achieved optimal performance (superior wear resistance, balanced strength‐ductility ...

Study of the contact angle and roughness effects on mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) analysis in natural/real carbonate rocks using massive pure minerals and synthetic carbonate rocks

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Studying pore networks in rocks is critical for understanding reservoir properties, with mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) being a key laboratory method.

Experimental Analysis and Physics‐Based Analytical Model on Twisted and Coiled Artificial Muscles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Twisted and coiled artificial muscles made from silver‐coated nylon fibers are investigated through experiments and analytical modeling. The actuators achieve contractions up to 19.3% and specific work of 8 kJ kg−1, though efficiency remains limited (≈0.15%) by thermal losses.

Relaxation of a dewetting contact line Part 1: A full-scale hydrodynamic calculation

open access: yes, 2007
The relaxation of a dewetting contact line is investigated theoretically in the so-called "Landau-Levich" geometry in which a vertical solid plate is withdrawn from a bath of partially wetting liquid.

Interactions between Molten High‐Silicon Electrical Steels and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how several molten high‐silicon electrical steels interact with both conventional and recycled MgO–C refractories. For this, various immersion experiments are conducted. In addition to infiltration, a number of mechanisms are identified and explained that control the corrosion of the refractory material.

Contact Angle Measurement of Magnesite Mineral in Alkaline pH by Using the Simple Bubble Attachment Method [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Economic and Environment Geology, 2018
Contact angle is one of the most important parameters for the flotation process. Researchers have performed many experiments and used many different methods to determine the contact angle.
