Quantitative imaging of Young’s modulus of solids: A contact-mechanics study [PDF]

open access: yesReview of Scientific Instruments, 2008
We developed equipment and methods for measuring quantitatively the local Young’s modulus of solids. It consists of an electrodeless langasite oscillator and line antennas, and oscillator vibrations are generated and detected contactlessly. A constant biasing force results from oscillator mass and is independent of surface roughness.

Strain-Dependent Solid Surface Stress and the Stiffness of Soft Contacts

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2017
Surface stresses have recently emerged as a key player in the mechanics of highly compliant solids. The classic theories of contact mechanics describe adhesion with a compliant substrate as a competition between surface energies driving deformation to ...

Contact Mechanics of Inflated Circular Membrane under Large Deformation: Analytical Solutions

open access: yesInternational Journal of Solids and Structures, 2021
Pressurization of thin elastomeric membranes has been exploited as a key actuation mechanism in soft robotics, leading to soft pneumatic actuators that can deform reversibly upon inflation and deflation. The contact mechanics of an inflated membrane with

SHAPE OPTIMIZATION OF CONTACT PROBLEMS SUBJECT TO MULTIPLE LOAD CASES USING BI-DIRECTIONAL EVOLUTIONARY STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION [PDF]

open access: yesمجله مدل سازی در مهندسی, 2012
Contact problems are one of widely used and important branches in solid mechanics. This paper aims at extending the bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) algorithm for optimal contact shape design in structures under the multiple ...

A truly variationally consistent and symmetric mortar-based contact formulation for finite deformation solid mechanics

open access: yesComputer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2018
In this work two mortar-based segment-to-segment contact formulations will be developed for the frictionless finite deformation case: While the first one is derived by consistent variation of all active contributions of a scalar-valued potential subject ...

Interplay between Interfacial Energy, Contact Mechanics, and Capillary Forces in EGaIn Droplets

open access: yesACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 2022
Eutectic gallium–indium (EGaIn) is increasingly employed as an interfacial conductor material in molecular electronics and wearable healthcare devices owing to its ability to be shaped at room temperature, conductivity, and mechanical stability.

Contact Mechanics for Solids with Randomly Rough Surfaces and Plasticity [PDF]

open access: yesLubricants, 2019
We present experimental results for the elastic and plastic deformation of sandblasted polymer balls resulting from contacts with flat smooth steel and silica glass surfaces. Nearly symmetric, Gaussian-like height probability distributions were observed experimentally before and remarkably, also after the polymer balls were deformed plastically.

Is there solid-on-solid contact in a sphere-wall collision in a viscous fluid? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We study experimentally the collision between a sphere falling through a viscous fluid, and a solid plate below. It is known that there is a well-defined threshold Stokes number above which the sphere rebounds from such a collision.

From the Fan-KKM principle to extended real-valued equilibria and to variational-hemivariational inequalities with application to nonmonotone contact problems

open access: yesFixed Point Theory and Algorithms for Sciences and Engineering, 2022
This paper starts off by the celebrated Knaster–Kuratowski–Mazurkiewicz principle in the formulation by Ky Fan. We provide a novel variant of this principle and build an existence theory for extended real-valued equilibrium problems with general, then ...

Computational and experimental diagnostics of the shear properties of greases [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2021
The study of the properties of consistent and liquid oils is currently receiving much attention in tribology. This is because lubrication is one of the most effective ways to improve machine durability.
