Symbol and superbaud timing recovery in multi-h continuous-phase modulation [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Communications, 1999
This letter is concerned with the estimation of two synchronization parameters that play a key role in multi- h continuous-phase modulation receivers—the ordinary symbol timing phase and the so-called superbaud timing phase.

Multiple Phase Synchronization in Continuous Phase Modulation

Digital Signal Processing, 1993
Abstract This paper illustrates decoding algorithms wherein carrier phase recovery is accomplished by means of an array of synchronizers, instead of a single synchronizer as happens in conventional schemes. Algorithms with multiple synchronization are compared with others (traditional and untraditional) in terms of implementation complexity and error

A partially coherent detector for continuous phase modulation

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 1989
A novel partially coherent detector for joint data detection and carrier phase estimation of continuous-phase-modulated (CPM) signal is presented. The algorithm differs from coherent Viterbi algorithm only in the metric which it maximizes over the possible transmitted data sequences. This metric is influenced both by the correlation of the hypothesized

A Pragmatic Approach to Coded Continuous-Phase Modulation

2007 Information Theory and Applications Workshop, 2007
In this paper, we show that a "pragmatic" approach to coded CPM schemes suffers from a significant capacity loss. This loss can be greatly reduced by choosing an appropriate mapping different from natural or Gray, adopted so far. We propose to add to the CPM modulator a linear feedback, optimized through capacity arguments, that permits to achieve ...

Doubly Iterative Equalization of Continuous-Phase Modulation

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2007
In this paper, a doubly iterative receiver is proposed for joint turbo equalization, demodulation, and decoding of coded binary continuous-phase modulation (CPM) in multipath fading channels. The proposed receiver consists of three soft-input soft-output (SISO) blocks: a front-end soft-information-aided minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer ...

Low complexity receivers for continuous phase modulation

2018 26th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2018
This paper investigates practical implementations of a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) receiver for CPM based on Laurent decomposition using Viterbi algorithm. On the other hand, the decomposition of the CPM signal in the Walsh signal space that brings the less hardware requirement is investigated.

Block encoding with continuous phase modulation

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1994
Block encoding is considered to increase the minimum distance of CPM signals. Codes are constructed to prevent merging events with low Euclidean distances. Numerical results presented with full response, partial response and trellis coded CPM signals indicate that block coding can significantly increase the minimum distance of the signals.

Noncoherent continuous-phase modulation for DS-CDMA

IEEE International Conference on Communications, 2003. ICC '03., 2004
The combination of continuous phase modulation (CPM) with direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) for multiuser transmission over the additive white Gaussian noise channel is discussed. Concentrating on the important special case of generalized minimum-shift keying, particularly simple receiver structures are obtained.

A Method of Moments Estimator for Modulation Index of Continuous Phase Modulation

2019 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC), 2019
A novel non data-aided estimator based upon the method of moments is proposed for estimating the modulation index of continuous phase modulation (CPM) schemes. Analytical expressions are derived for the asymptotic (large data record N) mean and variance of the estimator using truncated Taylor series.

Linearized continuous phase modulation

Conference Proceeding IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing, 2003
Linearized continuous phase modulation (LCPM) is introduced and compared to trellis-coded modulation (TCM). It is shown that a potential power gain exists in favor of LCPM over TCM at bandwidth efficiencies larger than 3 bps/Hz. Moreover, it is shown that LCPM can be generated using a single in-phase branch serially connected to a linear filter and ...
