Continuous Phase Modulation--Part II: Partial Response Signaling

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1981
An analysis of constant envelope digital partial response continuous Phase modulation (CPM) systems is reported. Coherent detection is assumed and the channel is Gaussian. The receiver observes the received signal over more than one symbol interval to make use of the correlative properties of the transmitted signal. The Systems are M -ary, and baseband

Soft carrier phase recovery for continuous phase modulations

2010 European Wireless Conference (EW), 2010
In this paper a general soft-based synchronization technique for continuous phase modulations (CPM) is presented. In particular two soft carrier phase estimation algorithms are derived, being the phase the parameter that shows the lower implementation complexity.

Markov Capacity of Continuous Phase Modulations

2007 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, 2007
We propose a novel iterative method, similar to the generalized Blahut-Arimoto algorithm recently proposed by Kavcic, to evaluate the Markov capacity of a continuous phase modulated signal over an additive white Gaussian noise channel. One of the novelty of our approach is that we maximize, with respect to the input distribution, the spectral ...

(Continuous) Phase Modulation on the Hypersphere

IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, 2016
We introduce phase modulation on the hypersphere (PMH) for load-modulated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitters with a single central power amplifier. In PMH, the peak to average ratio of the sum power before pulse shaping is 1; thus, the central power amplifier of load-modulated MIMO transmitters does not require any back-off.

A simplified continuous phase modulator technique

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing, 1994
A low cost GMSK (Gaussian minimum shift keying) modulation technique is presented. GMSK is chosen as an example although the technique is suitable for any continuous phase constant envelope modulation with discriminator, differential or coherent detection in the targeted receiver.

Convolutional coded continuous phase modulation with modified phase pulse signal

[1991] IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing Conference Proceedings, 1992
AbstractThe continuous phase modulation method (CPM) has the property that the phase of the modulated signal changes continuously. This modulation method requires smaller bandwidth and is useful in satellite communication. In the partial response CPM, the signal is modulated by overlapping a number of phase‐pulse signals with longer pulse length than ...

A Pragmatic Approach to Coded Continuous-Phase Modulation

2007 Information Theory and Applications Workshop, 2007
In this paper, we show that a "pragmatic" approach to coded CPM schemes suffers from a significant capacity loss. This loss can be greatly reduced by choosing an appropriate mapping different from natural or Gray, adopted so far. We propose to add to the CPM modulator a linear feedback, optimized through capacity arguments, that permits to achieve ...

Hybrid Maximum Likelihood Modulation Classification for Continuous Phase Modulations

IEEE Communications Letters, 2016
In this letter, we propose a hybrid maximum likelihood (HML) classifier for continuous phase modulation (CPM). To the best of our knowledge, the proposed likelihood function is the first one for CPM signals that is based on two of its main features: nonlinear waveform, which is represented with its principal components, and signal memory, which is ...

Robust time and phase synchronization for continuous phase modulation

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2006
A novel joint timing and phase-recovery technique is proposed for continuous phase modulation (CPM) systems based on Kalman filtering and an approximate representation of CPM signals with nonorthogonal exponential expansions (nOEE). Compared with existing techniques, the proposed synchronizer requires a less complex front-end processor, and can achieve

Continuous Phase Modulation for Fiber-Optic Links

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2011
Advances in photonics, silicon electronics and digital signal processing (DSP) have converged to enable highly efficient transmission across fiber optic channels. Single wavelength data rates of 112 Gb/s are sought for wide deployment based on QPSK transmission, coherent detection, and digital demodulation.
