[Update on postcoital hormonal contraception. Part 1].

In recent years new protocols of post-coital hormonal contraception have been devised that cause fewer side-effects. 0.2 mg ethinyl-estradiol with 2 mg norgestrel twice within 72 hours after intercourse were among the first combinations that would utilize low doses of hormones.

Postcoital contraception with estrogen-gestagen-combinations is a highly effective emergency measure in cases of unprotected sexual intercourse at midcycle. Pregnancies after hormonal postcoital contraception are rare and ectopic pregnancies are said to be an extreme rarity.
