The Effectiveness of Postcoital Hormonal Contraception

Family Planning Perspectives, 1992
The authors of a literature review of 10 studies on the efficacy of postcoital hormonal contraception (PCHC) contend that the studies failure rates were too low because they divided the number of observed pregnancies by total number of women treated with PCHC.

Postcoital Contraceptive Effects Of Agonist Analogs Of Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone

Fertility and Sterility, 1977
Various analogs of synthetic hypothalamic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) were evaluated for agonistic (ovulation-inducing), postcoital contraceptive, and direct uterotrophic activities. All analogs showing agonistic activity also possessed the ability to terminate pregnancy, as did LH-RH; there appeared to be a direct relationship ...

The hormonal and peripheral effects of -norgestrel in postcoital contraception

Contraception, 1974
Abstract The effects of postcoital d -norgestrel, in an oral dose of 400 mcg were studied in healthy, fertile women who had normal ovulatory menstrual cycles. Plasma LH showed alteration even with doses of only 1 to 3 tablets per cycle. However, midcycle peaks were usually not abolished, and coexisted with normal urinary pregnanediol levels. The

Mechanism of the Postcoital Contraceptive Effect of Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone: Ovarian Luteinizing Hormone Receptor Interactions*

Endocrinology, 1979
LHRH, via inducing inordinately high LH levels, can disrupt pregnancy in the rat. Based on studies indicating that LH can reduce gonadal content of its own receptor and thereby modify LH-dependent steroidogenesis, the effect of contragestational LHRH treatment on ovarian LH receptor dynamics was investigated.

Hormonal postcoital contraception with an ethinylestradiol-norgestrel combination and two danazol regimens

European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 1990
The ethinylestradiol-norgestrel combination (EE-NG) for postcoital contraception, as described by Yuzpe, has been shown to be an effective method but with frequent side effects. To overcome the problem of adverse effects a new approach using danazol was proposed, but the efficacy and acceptability of this treatment have not yet been tested in large ...

Hormonal postcoital contraception

The European Journal of Contraception & Reproductive Health Care, 1997
Wide availability of hormonal postcoital contraception (HPC) is likely to reduce the incidence of unplanned pregnancies. The two most common indications for HPC are unprotected intercourse and 'condom accidents'. The combined estrogen/progestogen HPC described by Yuzpe is the most widely used method.
