Abstract Shallow cumulus cloud fields in subtropical marine trade wind environments, particularly over the tropical Atlantic Ocean, show distinct organizational patterns. Among these, Flower‐type clouds are characterized by expansive stratiform cloud patches surrounded by regions of scattered convection.

The impact of air traffic on climate is dominated by the contribution of aircraft induced cirrus. Hence, any mitigation strategy has to consider the production of contrails and cirrus clouds.

Abstract Several lines of evidence indicate that aviation‐induced cirrus clouds contribute to global warming. These clouds produce both longwave and shortwave radiative forcing, yet their climate impacts are not well understood. To improve understanding of the climate effects of radiative forcing associated with aviation‐induced cirrus clouds, we use ...

Abstract Accurate representation of aerosol size distributions and total number concentrations is critical for evaluating particle impacts on climate, clouds, and public health. An Advanced Particle Microphysics model (APM) has been integrated into the USEPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) to improve its representation of ...

Contrail radiative forcing is difficult to obtain, even if contrail parameters like coverage, ice water content, crystal size etc. are known. Respective results as documented in literature hint to a substantial uncertainty.

Few-Shot Contrail Segmentation in Remote Sensing Imagery With Loss Function in Hough Space
Condensation trails, or contrails, are line-shaped clouds that are produced by an aircraft engine exhaust. These contrails often impact climate significantly due to their potential warming effect.

Zero-dimensional contrail models could underpredict lifetime optical depth [PDF]
Proposed contrail avoidance schemes rely on being able to robustly predict which contrails cause the most climate warming. However, it has not yet been shown that different contrail models agree sufficiently to support the targeting of individual ...

Abstract A new cirrus cloud parameterization for the ICOLMDZ atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) is presented. Prognostic equations for cloud fraction, ice water content and cloudy water vapor are introduced, and the processes that affect these quantities are parameterized.

Contrail and Cirrus Observations over Europe from 6 Years of NOAA-AVHRR Data
Thin ice clouds – cirrus and contrails – are analysed in a long-term 1 km data set from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). Here twice daily data received at DLR Oberpfaffenhofen covering most of Europe over the full lifetime of the ...

Contrail properties over the eastern North Pacific from AVHRR data
An increase of air traffic over the North Pacific during the last 30 years has been accompanied by an increase in cirrus coverage. To help alleviate the uncertainty in the contribution of air traffic to the cirrus increase, an analysis of linear contrail
