How efficiently can one untangle a double-twist? Waving is believing! [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
It has long been known to mathematicians and physicists that while a full rotation in three-dimensional Euclidean space causes tangling, two rotations can be untangled.

A Stylized Study of the Climate Response to Longwave and Shortwave Forcing at the Altitude of Aviation‐Induced Cirrus

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Several lines of evidence indicate that aviation‐induced cirrus clouds contribute to global warming. These clouds produce both longwave and shortwave radiative forcing, yet their climate impacts are not well understood. To improve understanding of the climate effects of radiative forcing associated with aviation‐induced cirrus clouds, we use ...

Influence of vortex dynamics and atmospheric turbulence on the early evolution of a contrail [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2010
This study describes three-dimensional numerical simulations of the evolution of an aircraft contrail during the first 30 min following the emission of exhausts.

Inverse Methods: a Powerful Tool for Evaluating Aerosol Data, Exemplified on Cases With Relevance for the Atmosphere and the Aerosol Climate Effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
For a complete description of a given aerosol, more than one parameter is necessary, e.g. parameters concerning size distribution, chemical composition, and particle morphology.

First simulations of cryoplane contrails [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2002
In this paper the first numerical simulations of condensation trails (contrails) from liquid hydrogen (LH2) fueled aircraft are presented. Such aircraft produces 2.6 times more exhaust water vapor than equivalent aircraft fueled by kerosene; however, combustion of LH2 produces no aerosol particles.

Improved Simulation of Particle Number Concentrations Over the US: Integrating a Size‐Resolved Advanced Particle Microphysics Model Into CMAQ

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 16, 28 August 2025.
Abstract Accurate representation of aerosol size distributions and total number concentrations is critical for evaluating particle impacts on climate, clouds, and public health. An Advanced Particle Microphysics model (APM) has been integrated into the USEPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) to improve its representation of ...

Impact of forecast stability on navigational contrail avoidance

open access: yesEnvironmental Research: Infrastructure and Sustainability
Mitigating contrail-induced warming by re-routing flights around contrail-forming regions requires accurate and stable forecasts of the state of the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Forecast stability (i.e.

A New Prognostic Parameterization of Subgrid Ice Supersaturation and Cirrus Clouds in the ICOLMDZ AGCM

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract A new cirrus cloud parameterization for the ICOLMDZ atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) is presented. Prognostic equations for cloud fraction, ice water content and cloudy water vapor are introduced, and the processes that affect these quantities are parameterized.

The role of air transportation in emissions through energy usage: Evidence from global data

open access: yesNatural Resources Forum, Volume 49, Issue 3, Page 2594-2618, August 2025.
Abstract Investigating the role that air transportation plays in regard to carbon emissions offers several valuable insights and contributions that are critical for addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development as far as climate mitigation, policy development and evaluation, technological innovation, public awareness engagement ...

Relating observations of contrail persistence to numerical weather analysis output [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2009
The potential for using high-resolution meteorological data from two operational numerical weather analyses (NWA) to diagnose and predict persistent contrail formation is evaluated using two independent contrail observation databases. Contrail occurrence
