Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Adaptive particle swarm optimization [PDF]
An adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO) that features better search efficiency than classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) is presented. More importantly, it can perform a global search over the entire search space with faster convergence ...

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Potential-Based Differential Evolution Algorithm With Joint Adaptation of Parameters and Strategies
In the differential evolution (DE) algorithm, numerous studies have independently performed strategy adaptation and parameter adaptation. However, the strategy and parameters are interrelated in their impact on algorithm performance.

The leapfrog algorithm, so called because of its geometric nature, for solving a class of optimal control problems is proposed. Initially a feasible trajectory is given and subdivided into smaller pieces. In each subdivision, with the assumption that local optimal controls can easily be calculated, a piecewise-optimal trajectory is obtained.

Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...
