Control Variates for Similarity Search

2021
We present an alternative technique for similarity estimation under locality sensitive hashing (LSH) schemes with discrete output. By utilising control variates and extra information, we are able to achieve better theoretical variance reductions compared to maximum likelihood estimation with extra information. We show that our method obtains equivalent

On control variate estimators

Computers & Operations Research, 1987
The use of different nonlinear control variates when special aspects of the simulation experiment make them advantageous is proposed. A class of estimators that contains new control variates that have advantages over known control variates in special situations is defined. The properties of this class of estimators are investigated.

Sliced-Wasserstein Estimation with Spherical Harmonics as Control Variates

International Conference on Machine Learning
The Sliced-Wasserstein (SW) distance between probability measures is defined as the average of the Wasserstein distances resulting for the associated one-dimensional projections.

Control Variate Remedies

Operations Research, 1990
Other than common random numbers, control variates is the most promising variance reduction technique in terms of its potential for widespread use: Control variates is applicable in single or multiple response simulation, it does not require altering the simulation run in any way, and any stochastic simulation contains potential control variates.

Control Variations in Sliding Mode Control

Proceedings of the 45th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2006
The purpose of this paper is to present a frame-work in which high-order control variations are employed in sliding mode control to modify the sliding dynamics and/or reduce the dimension of the sliding surface. Control variations are implemented as sampled data feedback controllers with the variations generated during the sample intervals.

Variation and Control of Process Behavior

International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 2008
The purpose of this work was to highlight the importance of controlling process variability for successful quality assurance (QA). We describe the method of statistical process control for characterizing and controlling a process. Traditionally, QA has been performed by comparing some important measurement (e.g., linear accelerator output) against a ...

A RED variation for delay control

2000 IEEE International Conference on Communications. ICC 2000. Global Convergence Through Communications. Conference Record, 2002
We evaluate a variation of random early detection (RED) for IP gateways (G/Ws), which drops/marks packets by controlling the average queue delay than the average queue size. The new algorithm is applied when the bandwidth of the outgoing connection varies over time and the service rate is explicitly advertised to the boundary G/W, such as in the ...

Control variates for efficient long-term extreme analysis of mooring lines

, 2020
Predicting the long-term extreme response is a major challenge for compliant offshore structures such as mooring lines. The structure is exposed to long-term uncertainties from varying environmental conditions and short-term uncertainties from random ...

Optimal Control for Variational Inequalities

SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 1986
The author derives first order necessary optimality conditions for control problems governed by elliptic variational inequalities, in the case of both distributed and boundary control. The form of these conditions allows as an application to obtain bang-bang results for certain classes of admissible controls.
