Performance for Introverts?

open access: yesSCENARIO: Journal for Performative Teaching, Learning, Research, 2019
A common preconception about performance in the foreign language classroom sees performance as geared towards extroverts: students who readily contribute to verbal classroom interaction in any case.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Structural Discourse Markers in German Palliative Care Interactions

open access: yesLanguages
The aim of this study is to provide a systematic account of structural discourse markers operating at a conversational macro-level in German Palliative Care interactions, focusing on their frequency, distribution, co-occurrence, and speaker-group ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Open-Retrieval Conversational Machine Reading

open access: yes, 2021
In conversational machine reading, systems need to interpret natural language rules, answer high-level questions such as "May I qualify for VA health care benefits?", and ask follow-up clarification questions whose answer is necessary to answer the original question. However, existing works assume the rule text is provided for each user question, which

Secondary Endovascular Conversions for Failed Open Repair

open access: yesAORTA, 2023
AbstractLate aortic and graft-related complications after open aortic repair are not infrequent and a significant number of them are missed, diagnosed at a very late stage, or present as urgent complications such as aortic rupture or aorto-enteric fistula. Once a late complication is diagnosed and reintervention is necessary, both open and endovascular

Conserved structural motifs in PAS, LOV, and CRY proteins regulate circadian rhythms and are therapeutic targets

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cryptochrome and PAS/LOV proteins play intricate roles in circadian clocks where they act as both sensors and mediators of protein–protein interactions. Their ubiquitous presence in signaling networks has positioned them as targets for small‐molecule therapeutics. This review provides a structural introduction to these protein families.

Xylose anaerobic conversion by open-mixed cultures [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2009
Xylose is, after glucose, the dominant sugar in agricultural wastes. In anaerobic environments, carbohydrates are converted into volatile fatty acids and alcohols. These can be used as building blocks in biotechnological or chemical processes, e.g., to produce bioplastics.

Med Student, Patient's Perspective

open access: yesVoices in Bioethics, 2014
First year students at the University of Michigan Medical School are sent in pairs to patients’ homes to help them appreciate the patient’s perspective. As we walked out of Mrs. D’s apartment, my partner said, “Go home and write your essay.
