Winds of Cool Giant Stars: Models and Observations
This review describes recent advances in models and observations of cool winds of asymptotic giant branch stars, focusing on infrared spectroscopy and interferometric methods, in combination with self-consistent time-dependent models of atmospheres and ...

Observations of Extremely Cool Stars. [PDF]
As one part of a program of infrared astronomy carried on at the California Institute of Technology, a survey of the sky in two infrared spectral ranges, 0.68-0.92 μand 2.01- 2.41 μ, is being carried out. The motivation for such a survey is to obtain an unbiased census of objects that emit in the 2.0-2.5-μ atmospheric window; this will, of course ...

Neutron Stars—Cooling and Transport [PDF]
Observations of thermal radiation from neutron stars can potentially provide information about the states of supranuclear matter in the interiors of these stars with the aid of the theory of neutron-star thermal evolution. We review the basics of this theory for isolated neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, including most relevant thermodynamic ...

The cooling of a compact star depends very sensitively on the state of dense matter at supranuclear densities, which essentially controls the neutrino emission, as well as on the structure of the stellar outer layers which control the photon emission.

Observing Dynamos in Cool Stars [PDF]
The main aim of this paper is to introduce the most important observables that help us to investigate stellar dynamos and compare those to the modeling results. We give an overview of the available observational methods and data processing techniques that are suitable for such purposes, with touching upon examples of inadequate interpretations as well.

The magnetic activity, winds and planets of young, cool stars [PDF]
This thesis uses spectropolarimetry to observationally investigate the properties of dynamos and winds of young cool stars, and search for young planets.

Abundances in cool evolved stars [PDF]
Nature has filled the upper right quadrant of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with more varieties of peculiar stars and odd chemical compositions than even our most speculative observers and theorists could dream up. To bring some structure to this vast subject I will categorize the phenomena we observe according to our model of stellar evolution ...

Cooling of a strange star with crust [PDF]
The cooling history of a strange star surrounded by a thin crust of ordinary matter is followed by solving analytically the general-relativistic equation of heat transfer across the crust. The surface temperature of the strange star is found to be lower than that of a neutron star (ordinary with core condensates) of the same age.
