Laser cooling and loading of Rb into a large period, quasi-electrostatic, optical lattice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This thesis reports on the design and construction of, and results from, an optical-dipole trapping apparatus developed to confine ultracold rubidium atoms in a conservative, large period, optical-dipole trap. An ultra-high vacuum system was designed and

Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Threshold Effects of Vegetation Structure on Outdoor Thermal Comfort: Balancing Radiative Shading and Ventilation in Rural Environments

open access: yesAtmosphere
Outdoor open spaces are essential for daily activities in ageing rural environments, yet the thermal effectiveness of vegetation under varying structural configurations remains unclear.

The performance and application of cross flow fans for automotive engine cooling systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
The work reported centres on the application of cross flow fan units to provide forced air flow over the radiator used for engine cooling. It is shown that a cooling system in which the airflow is ducted through the vehicle would lead to a significant ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

How does the ambient environment respond to the industrial heat island effects? An innovative and comprehensive methodological paradigm for quantifying the varied cooling effects of different landscapes

open access: yesGIScience & Remote Sensing, 2022
Local landscape patterns in cities can substantially alter surrounding land surface temperature (LST) and affect the surface urban heat island effect.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...
