Influence of reflected radiation waves caused by large mode field and large refractive index mismatches on splice loss evaluation between elliptical-hole lattice core holey fibers and conventional fibers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
When the mode field and refractive index mismatches between two spliced fibers are small, the splice loss is generally evaluated by calculating an overlap integral without reflection waves.

A Novel Excitation Approach for Power Transformer Simulation Based on Finite Element Analysis

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Power transformers play an indispensable component in AC transmission systems. If the operating condition of a power transformer can be accurately predicted before the equipment is operated, it will help transformer manufacturers to design optimized ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Tidal disruption of fuzzy dark matter subhalo cores

open access: yes, 2018
We study tidal stripping of fuzzy dark matter (FDM) subhalo cores using simulations of the Schr\"{o}dinger-Poisson equations and analyze the dynamics of tidal disruption, highlighting the differences with standard cold dark matter.

Modeling Frequency-Dependent Losses in Ferrite Cores [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2004
We suggest a practical approach for modeling frequency-dependent losses in ferrite cores for circuit simulation. Previous work has concentrated on the effect of eddy-current losses on the shape of the B--H loop, but in this paper we look at the problem from the perspective of energy loss and propose a different network for accurately modeling power ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Mass loss rates and the mass evolution of star clusters

open access: yes, 2010
We describe the interplay between stellar evolution and dynamical mass loss of evolving star clusters, based on the principles of stellar evolution and cluster dynamics and on a grid of N-body simulations of cluster models.

Stability of solitons in PT-symmetric couplers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Families of analytical solutions are found for symmetric and antisymmetric solitons in the dual-core system with the Kerr nonlinearity and PT-balanced gain and loss. The crucial issue is stability of the solitons.

Variation of Core Loss in High-Frequency Transformers Under Different Load Conditions

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of the Industrial Electronics Society, 2023
Typically, the core loss of transformers is considered constant, regardless of the load conditions on the secondary side. However, this assumption is no longer valid for high-frequency transformers (HFTs).

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
