Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Theoretical and practical limitations of the acetylene inhibition technique to determine total denitrification losses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The loss of N2 from intensively managed agro-ecosystems is an important part of the N budget. Flux monitoring of N2 emissions at the field scale, e.g., by eddy correlation or aerodynamic gradient method, is impossible due to the large atmospheric N2 ...

Low Loss Antiresonant Hollow Core Fibres [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics, 2011
We study the loss mechanisms in novel antiresonant hollow-core fibres and demonstrate the importance of optimising the air-cladding thickness and reducing the node size. Based on these rules we fabricate fibres with wide-bandwidth and low-loss.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Minimizing losses of a synchronous reluctance motor drive taking into account core losses and magnetic saturation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper proposes a loss-minimizing controller for synchronous reluctance motor drives. The proposed method takes core losses and magnetic saturation effects into account.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Reduction in Core Loss in Amorphous Cut Cores with Air Gaps

open access: yesIEEE Translation Journal on Magnetics in Japan, 1989
In order to reduce core losses in amorphous cut cores with air gaps, the effects of ferrite plates attached to the cut surfaces of the cores were investigated. It was learned that the attachment of thin ferrite plates decreases the core loss remarkably in such cores.
