The corneal stroma: an inhomogeneous structure
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 1997This study was conducted to determine the elemental composition of the human cornea. Special attention was paid to corneal stroma inhomogeneity.Seventy human corneas were examined by means of energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Epithelium, subepithelium, middle stroma, sub-Descemet layer, Descemet's membrane and endothelium were subjected to repeated ...

The organization of collagen in the corneal stroma
Experimental Eye Research, 2004The cornea has evolved to fulfil the dual functions of enclosing and protecting the inner contents of the eye, and focussing light onto the retina with minimum scatter and optical degradation. It does this by means of the arrangement of the constituent collagen fibrils, an arrangement that is unique in connective tissues.

Structure of the corneal stroma
Vision Research, 1970Abstract A pattern of stripes has been observed by several methods in the corneal stroma of rat, guinea-pig, rabbit and man. The stripes run throughout the stromal thickness, normal to the direction of the collagen fibres. The spatial period is 14–17 μm in man, and somewhat smaller in the other species.

Diffusion of fluorescein in the corneal stroma
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 1985Movement of fluorescein in the eye was simulated on the basis of a multiple-compartment model, in which the cornea was divided into a series of cylindrical sleeves to allow 3-dimensional diffusion of fluorescein with rapid exchange at the limbus. If the dye was administered into the central 5 mm of the cornea, the loss at the limbus was found to be ...

The transparency of the corneal stroma
Vision Research, 1969Abstract The refractive indices of the collagen fibrils and ground substance of corneal stroma have been calculated from electron microscopic and chemical data as 1.384 and 1.369 respectively. It is suggested that the transparency of the cornea is the result of the close similarity of these two values rather than the arrangement of the collagen ...

Factors Affecting Corneal Strip Stroma-to-Stroma Adhesion
Journal of Refractive Surgery, 1998ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Successful laser in situ keratomileusis depends on strong adhesion between the dissected anterior corneal flap and the underlying stromal bed, without suturing. This study attempts to generate new information about the mechanism of this adhesion.

Air-injection of the corneal stroma: A SEM study
Documenta Ophthalmologica, 1989The corneal stroma is supposed to be a homogeneous structure both from an optical and an anatomical point of view. Intrastromal injection of glutaraldehyde as a fixative causes local swelling and opacification of the corneal tissue. Local injections of small volumes of air superficially and more deeply into the corneal stroma produce similar swellings ...

Flow conductivity of human corneal stroma
Experimental Eye Research, 1970Human and rabbit corneal stroma have about the same flow conductivity in the hydration range of 2·5–5·0 g water per g dry tissue. The swelling pressure of human stroma is somewhat below that of rabbit stroma at physiological hydrations, i.e. 3–4 g water per g dry tissue.

Glycosaminoglycans in the developing corneal stroma
Experimental Eye Research, 1961The quantitative and qualitative variations of glycosaminoglycans in the developing chicken and calf cornea were determined. The total amount of these substances per dry weight of corneal stroma increases during embryonic development. In the chick embryo this increase was demonstrated mainly in the high molecular weight glucos-aminoglycan fraction and ...

Hydration and Transparency of Corneal Stroma
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1966When the corneal hydration increases, its transparency decreases but the quantitative relation between these two functions has not been extensively analyzed. The decreased transparency is due to the epithelial edema and the stromal edema, but their individual contribution to this decrease must be studied separately.
