Neutron diffraction studies of the corneal stroma

Journal of Molecular Biology, 1982
Abstract Low-angle neutron diffraction patterns have been obtained from demembranated beef corneal stroma using the D11 camera available at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble. These diffraction patterns show three peaks: the first peak corresponds to the interfibrillar distance in the stroma and the others are the third and fifth orders of the ...

Collagen fibrils of the vertebrate corneal stroma

Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1981
The collagen fibrils in adult corneal stromal lamellae from (a) bony fish and (b) cartilaginous fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals have been shown to have diameters of about 170 and 240–250 A, respectively. The only observed exception was for a young sea lion which had a mean collagen fibril diameter of about 170 A. Also, the mean diameters

Traumatic insertion of eyelashes into corneal stroma

Contact Lens and Anterior Eye, 2014
An unusual case of eyelashes being traumatically inserted into the corneal stroma is presented. A 75-year-old hit her right eye with her own fist, presenting with intra-corneal eyelashes. All remained entirely within the cornea, with no breach of the endothelium.

Heterogeneity of proteoglycans in monkey corneal stroma

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1983
The proteoglycans of the cynomolgus monkey corneal stroma were isolated and characterized by using a combination of physiochemical and biochemical methods. Proteoglycans were biosynthetically radiolabeled by incubating whole corneas in medium containing [35S]sulfate and either [3H]serine or [3H]mannose as precursors.

Striations of light scattering in the corneal stroma

Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1977
When the rabbit cornea is stressed in various ways, light focused on the stroma is scattered back in the form of striations. Light and electron microscopy reveal that the striations correspond to a waveform assumed by the collagen fibrils in the stroma when the tension on them is relaxed.

The distribution of acidic mucopolysaccharides in corneal stroma

Experientia, 1969
La distribution des mucopolysaccharides acides dans le stroma corneen est examinee. Tous les mucopolysaccharides se trouvent sur les fibrilles de collagene, tandis qu'il n'y en a pas entre les fibrilles.

Alternatives for corneal stroma replacement

Acta Ophthalmologica, 2022
AbstractCorneal blindness affects millions worldwide. The global shortage of donor corneas suitable for transplantation has led to the development of biomaterial‐based alternatives. The unique composition and structure of the corneal stroma are a significant challenge to replicate using conventional biomaterials and material fabrication techniques. One

Electrolyte content of the rabbit corneal stroma

Experimental Eye Research, 1967
An evaluation was made of the analytical methods for the determination of sodium, potassium and chloride from single extracts of the cornea. An extraction procedure with dilute nitric acid was found to give the reproducible data for this purpose. Using this technique, the concentrations of sodium, potassium and chloride were determined from single ...

Liquid Silicone Impregnation of the Corneal Stroma

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1971
The present corneal prostheses are plagued by complications which limit their longevity in some patients. A method is described for impregnating liquid silicone into the corneal stroma in order to convert it from a hydrophilic structure to one which resists swelling, maintains clarity when stored for prolonged periods, and is of suitable texture for ...

Dynamics of water transport in the corneal stroma

Experimental Eye Research, 1968
The rate at which corneal stroma imbibes water is shown to be related to the flow conductivity and the slope of the imbibition pressure-hydration relationship. The equation that gives imbibition rate in terms of these static (time invariant) properties was obtained previously from a purely physicochemical treatment of water movement in a swelling ...
