Umbilical Cord Stem Cells in the Treatment of Corneal Diseases

open access: yes, 2023
To restore transparency and function, corneal specialists currently utilise stem cells of different origins, bioengineered cells and biomaterials. Stem cells are capable of giving rise to progenies with specific functional and morphological traits and in

Corneal transplantation: Restoring sight to the blind

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Corneal blindness is one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide. Transplantation of the cornea can restore vision and make blind patients see again. Corneal transplant surgery has undergone major evolution in recent decades with the advent of minimally invasive lamellar surgical approaches such as DMEK and DALK.

Outcomes of therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty in acanthamoeba keratitis: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract While acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a sight‐threatening corneal infection, a thorough comparison of the outcomes of therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and therapeutic deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) is lacking. We aimed to compare clinical outcomes of PK and DALK in AK.

A modified technique for selective stromal transplantation

open access: yesРоссийский офтальмологический журнал
Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty and penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) are the operations of first choice for pathological changes of the cornea localized in the stroma or incurable pathology of the corneal stroma.

Electrolyte Content of the Corneal Stroma of the Bullfrog

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1970
SummaryThe Na+, K+, and Cl- content of aqueous humor of the bullfrog is 100, 2.4, and 82 meq/kg of water, respectively. The [Na+] and [K+] of the corneal stroma are significantly higher than those of the aqueous humor while the Cl- content of the stroma is essentially the same as that of the aqueous humor.

Nonclassical ultrasonographic presentation of retinal detachment: Blindness in a 21‐year‐old gelding with equine recurrent uveitis

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary A 21‐year‐old gelding, with a history of equine recurrent uveitis, was presented for a chronic nonhealing corneal ulcer. Ophthalmic examination of the right eye revealed a deep corneal ulcer, with the presence of corneal neovascularisation, mild diffuse corneal oedema and hypopyon. Additionally, the gelding was blind from the affected eye.
