Chronic Total Coronary Occlusions

Chronic total coronary occlusions (CTO) occur in up to one-third of patients undergoing coronary angiography. Indications for opening CTOs include relief of angina, improving left ventricular function, decreasing the need for coronary artery bypass surgery, and improved long-term survival.

Two fatal cases of coronary occlusion occurring during EST are reported. The need for adequate evaluation of cardiovascular status in patients subjected to EST is emphasized. The risk of EST is great in older persons with ischemic heart disease.
