A novel group 1 coronavirus was previously identified in bent-winged bats (Miniopterus spp.). Here, results are described from our ongoing surveillance of these bats for coronaviruses.

Bats are natural reservoirs for many emerging viruses, including coronaviruses that were probably progenitors to human coronaviruses with epidemic and pandemic potential, which highlights the importance of screening studies of bat-derived viruses.

ABSTRACT Background Secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) is an inflammatory mediator linked to acute chest syndrome (ACS) in sickle cell disease (SCD), a serious complication that can develop during an acute vaso‐occlusive pain episode (VOE). Plasma sPLA2 levels have been proposed as a potential biomarker for predicting ACS onset.
