Evidence for orexinergic mechanisms in migraine

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2015
Objective: To examine the effect of the orexinergic blockade with a dual orexin receptor antagonist (DORA) on experimental models of peripheral and central trigeminal as well as cortical activation relevant to migraine and migraine aura. Methods: In this

The Role of Metabolism in Migraine Pathophysiology and Susceptibility

open access: yesLife, 2021
Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling primary headache disorder, however its pathophysiology remains unclear, hindering successful treatment. A number of key secondary headache disorders have headaches that mimic migraine. Evidence has suggested a

Spreading dynamics on spatially constrained complex brain networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The study of dynamical systems defined on complex networks provides a natural framework with which to investigate myriad features of neural dynamics and has been widely undertaken.

Spinal and cortical spreading depression enhance spinal cord activity

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2004
Cortical spreading depression (CSD) has been suggested to underlie some neurological disorders such as migraine. Despite the intensity with which many investigators have studied SD in the brain, only a few studies have aimed to identify SD in the spinal ...

Neuronal and astroglial correlates underlying spatiotemporal Intrinsic Optical Signal in the rat hippocampal slice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Widely used for mapping afferent activated brain areas in vivo, the label-free intrinsic optical signal (IOS) is mainly ascribed to blood volume changes subsequent to glial glutamate uptake.

Intravenous ketamine for subacute treatment of refractory chronic migraine: a case series. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
BACKGROUND: Refractory migraine is a challenging condition with great impact on health related quality of life. Intravenous (IV) ketamine has been previously used to treat various refractory pain conditions.

Nucleation of reaction-diffusion waves on curved surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We study reaction-diffusion waves on curved two-dimensional surfaces, and determine the influence of curvature upon the nucleation and propagation of spatially localized waves in an excitable medium modelled by the generic FitzHugh-Nagumo model.

The Case of a 28‐Year‐Old Woman With Medically Refractory Focal Epilepsy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present the case of a 28‐year‐old right‐handed woman with medically refractory focal epilepsy. Her seizure semiology and electroencephalography (EEG) indicated a seizure onset zone in the right central‐parietal area. However, both MRI and PET scans were unremarkable, showing no focal lesions or areas of altered metabolism.

ALS With and Without Upper Motor Neuron Signs: A Comparative Study Supporting the Gold Coast Criteria

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The Gold Coast criteria permit diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) even without upper motor neuron (UMN) signs. However, whether ALS patients with UMN signs (ALSwUMN) and those without (ALSwoUMN) share similar characteristics and prognoses remains unclear.
