Recent Advances in Stimuli‐Responsive Materials and Soft Robotic Actuators for Bioelectronic Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores the integration of responsive materials and soft robotic actuators with implantable electronics to address key challenges in bioelectronic medicine. By enabling shape actuation, these technologies improve deployment, adaptability, and accuracy in minimally invasive procedures.

Electrophysiological analysis of transcranial direct current stimulation and its effect on cortical spreading depression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS) allows for the noninvasive modulation of cortical activity. In this study, the effects of cathodal and anodal TDCS treatment on baseline activity in the motor cortex of rats were investigated via ...

Gabapentin Suppresses Cortical Spreading Depression Susceptibility [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism, 2010
Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is an intense depolarization wave implicated in the pathophysiology of brain injury states and migraine aura. As Cav2.1 channels modulate CSD susceptibility, we tested gabapentin, which inhibits Cav2.1 through high-affinity binding to its α2δ subunit, on CSD susceptibility in anesthetized rats. Gabapentin, 100 or 200

Muscle‐Derived Small Extracellular Vesicles Mediate Exercise‐Induced Cognitive Protection in Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
sEVs have a critical role in orchestrating interorgan crosstalk and mediating exercise‐induced therapeutic effects. Lin et al. demonstrates that sEVs miR‐17/20a‐5p mediates the muscle‐brain crosstalk and emphasizes the central role of mTOR signaling in executing molecular programs that can protect brain health in response to exercise. Abstract Physical

Aura and Head pain: relationship and gaps in the translational models

open access: yesThe Journal of Headache and Pain, 2019
Migraine is a complex brain disorder and initiating events for acute attacks still remain unclear. It seems difficult to explain the development of migraine headache with one mechanism and/or a single anatomical location.

Astrocyte deletion of α2-Na/K ATPase triggers episodic motor paralysis in mice via a metabolic pathway

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Mutations of α2-Na/K ATPase can cause familial hemiplegic migraine via unclear mechanisms. Here, the authors show that deletion of α2-Na/K ATPase in astrocytes results in gene expression and metabolic changes leading to cortical spreading depression and ...

fMRI evidence that precision ophthalmic tints reduce cortical hyperactivation in migraine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Certain patterns can induce perceptual illusions/distortions and visual discomfort in most people, headaches in patients with migraine, and seizures in patients with photosensitive epilepsy.

Cortical spreading depression and habituation [PDF]

open access: yesPsychonomic Science, 1966
Habituation of exploratory activity in a novel situation was studied in rats under several conditions of cortical spreading depression. The results suggest the tentative conclusion that the cortex is not necessary for temporary storage of information pertaining to the stimulus situation, but is needed for permanent storage of this same information.

Network Desynchronization with Sine Waves: from Synchrony to Asynchrony by Periodic Stimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Exogenous alternating current fields are explored and interact with cerebral cortex slow waves in vitro and in silico. Varying frequency and amplitude of sine waves result in distinct network dynamics, from phase‐locking and entrainment to desynchronization. These responses occupy specific regions within the parameter space.

The Locus Coeruleus‐Periaqueductal Gray GABAergic Projection Regulates Comorbid Pain and Depression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
LC‐GABA neurons exhibit elevated activity to noxious and aversive stimuli in chronic pain, and their activation alleviates pain‐ and depression‐like behaviors. While LC‐GABA neurons target LC‐NA neurons and GABA and Glu neurons in the vlPAG, they modulate the pain responses of LC‐NA neurons but regulate pain‐ and depression‐like behaviors through their
