Peripheral Inflammation and Sleep Loss Induce Coordinated Motivational Changes: An Experimental Two‐Hit Stress Model

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, Volume 35, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Sleep loss and low‐grade inflammation are common stressors that affect behaviour and recovery needs. To examine their separate and combined effects on motivation for everyday behaviours, we developed a two‐hit experimental model. Participants (N = 56, 31 women) completed three experimental visits: sleep saturation (two nights, 9 h in bed/night)

Postmortem Evidence of CRH Neuron Reduction in Narcolepsy Without Cataplexy With Borderline Hypocretin‐1 Levels

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, Volume 35, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Narcolepsy is classified as type 1 (NT1) or type 2 (NT2) mainly according to hypocretin deficiency rather than cataplexy. While CRH neuron loss in the PVN has been described in NT1, it remains unclear whether similar changes occur in narcolepsy without cataplexy.

Proopiomelanocortin (POMC)–β‐Endorphin System in the Rat Colon: Expression, Up Regulation by Stress, and Correlation With Stress‐Induced Visceral Analgesia

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, Volume 38, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study identified a functional proopiomelanocortin–β‐endorphin system in the rat colon. Peripheral CRF and repeated water avoidance stress increased colonic POMC expression, which was associated with reduced visceral pain. These findings suggest that, outside the pituitary, a CRF‐ and stress‐sensitive enteric POMC–β‐endorphin system may help ...
