A 71-year-old female patient was hospitalized with membranous laryngopharyngitis typical of classical diphtheria. A toxigenic strain of Corynebacterium ulcerans was isolated from the throat. Corynebacterium ulcerans is a bacterium able to infect humans by inducing a disease close to diphtheria. We describe the case of a 83-year-old patient hospitalized as a matter of urgency in intensive care for which C. ulcerans was isolated in pure culture in its bronchial samples.

Pulmonary nodules due to Corynebacterium ulcerans

A 53 year old male with symptoms of coughing for 6 months presented with bilateral multiple pulmonary nodules suggestive of metastatic disease. By surgical resection 4 out of 6 nodules were removed. Histopathological examination showed granulomatous necrotizing inflammation with growth of Corynebacterium ulcerans, which did not produce diphtheria toxin.
