'Corynebacterium ulcerans': a potential cause of diphtheria.

Symptoms similar to those of diphtheria may occasionally be caused by micro-organisms other than Corynebacterium diphtheriae, such as zoonotic corynebacteria. A case of pharyngitis caused by toxigenic 'C. ulcerans' in a 9 year old girl illustrates the importance of including diphtheroids in the differential diagnosis.

A 42-year-old woman with bronchial asthma since childhood was admitted to hospital because of severe dyspnoea. Emergency bronchoscopic intubation had to be performed for life-threatening inspiratory and expiratory stridor. This demonstrated that the larynx was covered by a dirty-grey membrane and the vocal-cord gap was narrowed to a mere slit.
