Astroparticle Physics: Detectors for Cosmic Rays

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2006
We describe the work that we have done over the last decade to design and construct instruments to measure properties of cosmic rays in Mexico. We describe the measurement of the muon lifetime and the ratio of positive to negative muons in the natural background of cosmic ray muons at 2000 m.a.s.l.

High stakes for cosmic ray detectors

Physics World, 1995
It is difficult to imagine a more fitting tribute to Pierre Auger, the multi-talented French physicist who died 18 months ago, than the Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Project. Besides the Auger effect and neutron spallation, Auger also discovered the "air showers" produced by cosmic rays when they interact with nuclei in the Earth's atmosphere, and was a ...

A portable cosmic ray detector and display

1999 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium. Conference Record. 1999 Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (Cat. No.99CH37019), 2003
We have developed a hand-held, particle tracking detector based on scintillating-glass, fiber-optic plate technology for applications in classroom teaching. The active element is sensitive to ionizing radiation and is a coherent fiber-optic plate consisting of 10/sup 6/ individual clad fiber waveguides that contain Terbium (3+) oxide in a silicate ...

Calibration of the DANSS Detector with Cosmic Rays

Bulletin of the Lebedev Physics Institute, 2018
The DANSS detector is a scintillation detector surrounded by passive and active shield. The energy calibration procedure of individual scintillation strips of the detector using cosmic muons is described.
