Astroparticle Physics: Detectors for Cosmic Rays
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2006We describe the work that we have done over the last decade to design and construct instruments to measure properties of cosmic rays in Mexico. We describe the measurement of the muon lifetime and the ratio of positive to negative muons in the natural background of cosmic ray muons at 2000 m.a.s.l.

Detectors of Cosmic Rays, Gamma Rays, and Neutrinos
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009We summarize the main features, properties and performances of the typical detectors in use in Cosmic Ray Physics. A brief historical and general introduction will focus on the main classes and requirements of such detectors.

NINA: a silicon detector for cosmic-ray astrophysics
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2001Abstract The NINA apparatus, on board the satellite Resurs-01 n.4, has been orbiting the Earth since July 10th, 1998, in polar revolution at 1 AU. Its scientific goal is the study of the galactic, solar and anomalous components of the cosmic rays in the range 10–200 MeV/n.

High stakes for cosmic ray detectors
Physics World, 1995It is difficult to imagine a more fitting tribute to Pierre Auger, the multi-talented French physicist who died 18 months ago, than the Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Project. Besides the Auger effect and neutron spallation, Auger also discovered the "air showers" produced by cosmic rays when they interact with nuclei in the Earth's atmosphere, and was a ...

Cherenkov detectors in cosmic ray studies
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1986Abstract Some methods of Cherenkov radiation detector application to the study of cosmic rays and gamma astronomy at super-high energies are discussed.

Detectors of Ultraheavy Cosmic Rays
1983Ultraheavy cosmic rays have been measured by both passive and electronic detectors. These detectors are reviewed, and the requirements are given for a detector to make the next major step in this area.

Using RPC Detectors as Cosmic Rays Monitor
IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 2007We have measured the cosmic ray absolute flux and its variations caused by the ldquoday-nightrdquo and the ldquobarometricrdquo effects, by using a telescope of resistive plate chamber (RPC) detectors. Because of the high sensitivity needed for this measure, the RPC behaviour must be very well controlled and all the influences induced by the ...

A portable cosmic ray detector and display
1999 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium. Conference Record. 1999 Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (Cat. No.99CH37019), 2003We have developed a hand-held, particle tracking detector based on scintillating-glass, fiber-optic plate technology for applications in classroom teaching. The active element is sensitive to ionizing radiation and is a coherent fiber-optic plate consisting of 10/sup 6/ individual clad fiber waveguides that contain Terbium (3+) oxide in a silicate ...
