Analysis of Respiratory Behaviour of Thicklipped Grey Mullet (Chelon labrosus) Juveniles Under Different Rearing Conditions

open access: yesFishes
Thicklipped grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) shows potential as an appealing species for aquaculture in the EU. Knowledge of its metabolic requirements is essential for species management and control of environmental conditions.

Does Capitation Matter? Impacts on Access, Use, and Quality

open access: yesInquiry: The Journal of Health Care Organization, Provision, and Financing, 2004
Provider capitation may constrain costs, but it also may reduce access and quality of care. We examine the impacts of capitating the usual source of care of enrollees in health maintenance organizations (HMOs).

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Cost of Living/Cost of Smoking:A Demonstration Study of Cooperative Action Learning to Understand and Address Smoking in Deprived Communities Within the Cost-of-Living Crisis [PDF]

open access: yes
Smoking is responsible for over 8 million deaths globally per annum. While socially disadvantaged communities are disproportionately affected, few interventions effectively reach these groups.

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Health workers’ attitudes and perceptions towards medically assisted dying: a systematic review

open access: yesPalliative Medicine in Practice
BACKGROUND: Medically assisted dying (MAD), including euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS), is a highly controversial topic in healthcare, posing significant ethical dilemmas for health workers. This systematic review mapped evidence on health

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...
