Removing exogenous information using pedigree data
Management of certain populations requires the preservation of its pure genetic background. When, for different reasons, undesired alleles are introduced, the original genetic conformation must be recovered.

Pendulous Crop in Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
Abstract Quail chicks from a line selected for growth on a low protein (17.9%) glucose monohydrate-soybean meal diet showed a high incidence, 44.0%, of pendulous crop as compared to 11.8% in the control line fed the same ration. Substituting sucrose for glucose monohydrate did not change the incidence of pendulous crop in either the control or the ...

Matching Multiple Backgrounds: Egg Camouflage Across Different Habitats in a Shorebird
We studied egg camouflage in Kentish plovers nesting in two visually distinct habitats, sandy beaches and salt marshes, in southern Spain. Despite initial expectations of local adaptation or compromise camouflage, the birds instead chose nest sites within each habitat that shared overlapping colour and visual texture characteristics, allowing effective

Silent Spring - the lost call [PDF]
The "silence" in Rachel Carson's Silent Spring1 alludes to the demise of bird populations through reproductive problems and death resulting from exposure to the pesticides of that time, many of which are endocrine active.

Birds Decorating Their Nests With Plastic May Suffer Less Egg Depredation by Corvids
Many birds add anthropogenic material to the nest. We presented artificial nests on the ground in spring, each with two quail eggs and half of them decorated with pieces of white plastic. The plastic induced a neophobic response in territorial European magpies, reducing the rate of nest predation.

Phenotypic flexibility and the evolution of organismal design [PDF]
Evolutionary biologists often use phenotypic differences between species and between individuals to gain an understanding of organismal design. The focus of much recent attention has been on developmental plasticity – the environmentally induced ...

European quails were fed diets containing soybean oil, linseed oil, Brazil nut oil, fish oil, and their other mixes. After 60 days of frozen storage, quail breast meat from birds receiving Brazil nut oil (alone or combined with soybean oil) exhibited the greatest oxidative stability, maintaining color and reducing lipid and protein oxidation markers ...

Ultrasound‐Activated Biodegradable Piezoelectric Chitosan Nanoparticles for Glioblastoma Treatment
Biodegradable chitosan nanoparticles are engineered to exhibit intrinsic piezoelectric properties, enabling ultrasound (US) activation for glioblastoma treatment. Their electromechanical behavior, biocompatibility, and anticancer efficacy are demonstrated, showing that US‐driven piezostimulation induces oxidative stress and apoptosis without drugs ...

An in vitro assay for neural crest cell migration through the somites [PDF]
Neural crest cells in the trunk of the avian embryo come into contact with the somites and neural tube during the course of their migration. However, the relationship between the somites and the early migratory routes followed by these cells is not yet ...
