Abstract S ome salient aspects from recent papers of Mindlin, Koiter and Kroner on couple stresses are briefly discussed in order to evaluate the engineering importance of these stresses. Results are reported of bending tests on aluminium alloy sheet specimens to study the effect of sheet thickness on the flexural rigidity.

The Physics of Fluids, 1966
The effects of couple stresses in fluids are considered. Linearized constitutive equations are proposed for force and couple stresses. A series of boundary-value problems are solved to indicate the effects of couple stresses as well as for experiments measuring the various material constants. It is found that a size effect comes in which is not present

Involuntary sterility is undeniably a most stressful situation for a couple to find themselves in. However, the role stress itself plays in the aetiology of childlessness and how best this can be treated is unclear. This is hardly surprising for, although stress may be investigated and treated biochemically and psychologically, and while there is a ...

Couple-stress–based gradient theory of poroelasticity
Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2023In this research, we present a gradient theory of poroelasticity based on the couple-stress. Within the context of finite deformations and in a thermodynamically consistent manner, the constitutive equations for the porous solid are derived by including the solid vorticity gradient and its power-conjugate counterpart, namely, the couple-stress ...

Couple Stresses and More General Stresses
1978Let dσ λ (u λ dσ λ = 0) represent the infinitesimal spatial oriented surface dσ through the event point E (or x ρ ) in the world tube WC of body C—cf. (24.1). We consider the forces exerted by the matter elements contiguous to the negative face of dσ on those contiguous to the positive one.

Stress in couples undergoing assisted reproductive technology
Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 2020To determine the associations between pre-treatment self-reported stress level, salivary cortisol levels, and clinical pregnancy outcome in couples undergoing assisted reproductive technology treatment (ART).Seventy-five couples (150 patients) undergoing ART treatment were enrolled in this study.

In the mechanics of particles it is usually proved that a system of forces, say f (1),f (2),...,f (n) acting on a system of particles M1,...,Mn may be reduced to the resultant force (6.1) and to the resultant couple, which is defined with respect to a pole 0 by the expression (6.2) where r i are position vectors of the particles ...

On Incremental Deformations of Initially Stressed Media with Couple Stresses
Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1978Abstract A two-dimensional theory for the incremental deformations of an initially stressed continuum with couple stresses is established in this paper. As applications of theory, the problems of internal instability and wave propagation are studied. It is found that the otherwise non-dispersive waves become dispersive, and additional local modes of ...
