In the history of sub-Saharan Africa, pastoralists and their livestock often bear the brunt of violence and war. For warring parties, livestock are easier targets than the crops of farmers. Small ruminants, and especially cattle, areslaughtered to feed people in arms, as eating meat in abundance is an expression of power, wealth and prestige.
