Cowpox virus virulence determinants
New cowpox virus (CPXV) infections occur naturally in Germany in increasing numbers. It is striking that an infection of the pet rats with these newly occurring CPXV strains often leads to a lethal outcome. Likewise, a CPXV isolate from a pet rat that as well caused human infection in Southern Germany, RatPox09, causes severe disease in Wistar rats ...

Immune modulation by virus-encoded secreted chemokine binding proteins [PDF]
Chemokines are chemoattractant cytokines that mediate the migration of immune cells to sites of infection which play an important role in innate and adaptive immunity. As an immune evasion strategy, large DNA viruses (herpesviruses and poxviruses) encode

Novel Orthopoxvirus and Lethal Disease in Cat, Italy
We report detection and full-genome characterization of a novel orthopoxvirus (OPXV) responsible for a fatal infection in a cat. The virus induced skin lesions histologically characterized by leukocyte infiltration and eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions.

Genome signatures, self-organizing maps and higher order phylogenies: a parametric analysis [PDF]
Genome signatures are data vectors derived from the compositional statistics of DNA. The self-organizing map (SOM) is a neural network method for the conceptualisation of relationships within complex data, such as genome signatures.
