A model for characterizing crack closure effect of rocks

Engineering Geology, 2015
Abstract When there are large amounts of microcracks in the rock, they influence the rock strength and deformation significantly. The crack closure behavior in compression tests and its quantitative characterization are studied in this paper.

Effect of crack closure on gear crack propagation

International Journal of Fatigue, 2001
Computational and experimental studies were performed in order to investigate the propagation of cracking in a spur gear tooth. The stress intensity factors were numerically calculated by the definition of weight functions and by finite element analysis.

Closure Effects on Fatigue Crack Detection

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1999
An experimental study of crack closure and its effects on the vibration of a simple beam shows that both frequency and damping changes due to the crack are influenced significantly, to the point of being obscured in some cases. The nonlinearity induced by crack closure is also explored.

Comparison of Crack Growth Models and Crack Closure Effect

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
According to standard test method for fatigue crack growth rates of metallic materials, the crack growth rate of 30NCD16 at three stress ratio (R=0.1, 0.3 and 0.5) were measured. Based on linear elasticity fracture mechanics theory, the fatigue crack growth rate was studied through the nonlinear least squares fitting method.
