Lateral Impact Response of Concrete-Filled Square Steel Tubes with Local Defects
A numerical model of 84 high-strength concrete-filled square steel tubular columns (HSCFST) with local defects is developed using ABAQUS. The effects of parameters such as crack angle, crack length, impact surface and impact energy on the impact ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Closure Effect of I + II Mixed-mode Crack for EA4T Axle Steel
The crack-closure effect is a crucial factor that affects the crack growth rate and should be considered in simulation analysis and testing. A mixed-mode I + II loading fatigue crack growth test was performed using EA4T axle steel specimens.

Permanent indentation characterization for low-velocity impact modelling using three-point bending test [PDF]
This paper deals with the origin of permanent indentation in composite laminates subjected to low-velocity impact. The three-point bending test is used to exhibit a non-closure of matrix crack which is assumed as a cause of permanent indentation ...

First large scale application with self-healing concrete in Belgium : analysis of the laboratory control tests [PDF]
Due to the negative impact of construction processes on the environment and a decrease in investments, there is a need for concrete structures to operate longer while maintaining their high performance.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Development of a fretting-fatigue mapping concept: The effect of material properties and surface treatments [PDF]
Fretting-fatigue induced by combined localized cyclic contact motion and external bulk fatigue loadings may result in premature and dramatic failure of the contacting components.
