Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Microstructural modelling of creep crack growth from a blunted crack [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The effect of crack tip blunting on the initial stages of creep crack growth is investigated by means of a planar microstructural model in which grains are represented discretely. The actual linking-up process of discrete microcracks with the macroscopic

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Fatigue and Crack Growth under Constant- and Variable-Amplitude Loading in 9310 Steel Using “Rainflow-on-the-Fly” Methodology

open access: yesMetals, 2021
Fatigue of materials, like alloys, is basically fatigue-crack growth in small cracks nucleating and growing from micro-structural features, such as inclusions and voids, or at micro-machining marks, and large cracks growing to failure.

Hydrogen-Enhanced Fatigue Crack Growth in a Single-Edge Notched Tensile Specimen Under In-Situ Hydrogen Charging Inside an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope

open access: yesActa Materialia, 2019
Fatigue crack growth (FCG) test was done on a pre-cracked single-edge notched tensile (SENT) specimen with oligocrystalline ferritic structure. Innovative in-situ hydrogen (H)- charging by plasma inside an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM)

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

An experimental study of residual stress and direction-dependence of fatigue crack growth behaviour in as-built and stress-relieved selective-laser-melted Ti6Al4V [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Selective-laser-melting (SLM) is a powder-bed fusion additive-manufacturing process that has the potential to deliver three-dimensional complex parts with mechanical properties comparable or superior to parts produced via traditional manufacturing using ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.
